Talk:Engineering
I just moved my changes in to the page on 9/14/25, and collapsing the discussion below. Also, I did not do as much consolidating as I thought, and mostly added more links to related wikis.
Further improvement ideas Here are some things I considered adding for this rewrite, but wanted to publish changes and move on:
- more in-game pictures to show what's being discussed
- section explaining the different computers/consoles found in Engineering
- the formatting on the Equipment section is awkward, but I'm not sure how to improve that at the moment
I don't have any immediate plans to work on these since there are a few other pages I'd like to improve first (especially Station Engineer). Leaving these ideas here for someone else, or when I come back to this page. --KindaNice (talk) 12:01, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
I'm planning a project to consolidate several of the current engineering role pages into this one, similar to how Science is set up. Here's the temp page I'm using for edits - User:KindaNice/Engineering_rework
Here's pages related to Engineering that I want to clearly separate (most to de-duplicate information):
- Chief Engineer
- Atmospheric Technician
- Station Engineer
- Technical Assistant
- Hacking
- Power
- Atmospherics
- Construction
- Pipes and vents
The basic structure to follow (again, stolen from Science) will be as follows, with most :
- Preamble - explains what you do in engineering, names the sub-departments and roles.
- Staff - specific roles briefly explained
- Responsibilities
- Power generation systems
- Fuel-based power - AME and portable generators
- Containment-based power - singularity and tesla
- Permanent power - TEG (link to Atmo section), solar panels, RTGs, & Supermatter Crystal
- Atmospherics
- Distro and waste
- Fixing spacing and gas leaks
- Telecomms
- Gravity
- Anchor
- Power generation systems
- Equipment
- Tools - a table of starting tools (organized by role)
- Vending machines
- Other departments - what is commonly requested by or from other departments

- I am very much in favor of this. I've always thought having so many different pages for Engineering is detrimental (which is why I'm critical of Medical, Guide to Medical, Medicine, and Reagents all existing at once), BUT I do think that it's still worth it to keep all job articles (Chief Engineer, Atmospheric Technician, Station Engineer, and Technical Assistant) because literally every other (non-ghost) role has a dedicated article, even if short like Service Worker. This is OK, not every article needs to be big, it just needs to give readers info they're likely looking for (like loadouts, which should be added to them). Keeping Construction seems good to me too, as to not bloat what will already be a very big article with a large list of craftable items that aren't even unique to Engineering. Everything else, in my opinion, can go. --Rubyn (talk) 22:39, 3 September 2025 (UTC)
